Glasgow Caledonian University has become one of the largest universities in Scotland over the past ten years, with more than 15,000 students. The University campus is self-contained and situated right in the heart of the lively city of Glasgow, one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. The University has more than 90 undergraduate programmes, 40 postgraduate programmes and a large number of students engaged in research for PhDs.
Academic strengths
At Glasgow Caledonian University all teaching is carried out within eight academic schools. These are Built and Natural Environment; Caledonian Business School; Computing and Mathematical Sciences; Engineering, Science and Design; Health and Social Care; Law and Social Sciences; Life Sciences and Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health.
Caledonian Business School has an excellent reputation for developing and delivering innovative new programmes in areas such as risk management and fashion marketing.
In health, we embrace the disciplines of biosciences, midwifery, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, podiatry, radiography, social sciences and social work. Since 1993, the University’s School of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health has been designated as the only World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for nursing development in Scotland.
In science and technology, the University has some of the most modern engineering laboratories in the country and offers significant technical expertise in building and surveying, computing, mathematics, chemistry, energy studies, product design, engineering and environmental studies.
Strong links with industry enable Glasgow Caledonian University to design programmes with a strong career focus providing graduates with skills that are relevant today and for the future job market. Caledonian University was placed 2nd in Scotland and 11th out of 97 universities in Britain by leading UK companies when asked which graduates they found most employable.
Glasgow Caledonian University has a well-established reputation for providing high quality teaching, learning and research which dates back throughout its founding institutions to 1875. All programmes are designed to offer students an effective combination of academic study and practical experience. In addition, students also have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills such as computing, foreign languages and communication skills.
Facilities
The University is located in a modern, purpose-built campus in the centre of the city of Glasgow, the largest and most vibrant city in Scotland. In recent years we have invested £90 million in developing campus facilities, including student accommodation improvements, a sports and recreation facility, a learning cafe and a modern health building containing a virtual hospital. The most recent addition to the campus is a state-of-the-art learning centre - The Saltire Centre.
All new facilities have been purpose-built to meet the needs of students. A feature of all the University’s facilities is the strong emphasis on new technology with all students having easy access to modern computers and software packages.
