Brunel has been a university since 1966 and in that time has developed extensive and rewarding links with industry, commerce and other providers of education. Brunel now has 12,000 students, including an international student contingent of some 2,000 originating from more than 100 countries.
The University’s campus is situated in Uxbridge on the western edge of London and is the nearest university to London’s Heathrow Airport. The University is close enough to the capital to sample the delights of one of the greatest cities in the world but far enough away to avoid the high costs, noise and the sheer number of people. Central London is just a short ride away by public transport but so too is the lovely countryside of the home counties.
In addition, Brunel is one of the UK’s most ambitious, forward-looking universities and is well into a £120 million 10-year spending programme.
Academic strengths
Brunel University is a research-led institution and its courses focus on engineering, technology, pure and applied sciences, education and social sciences (including law, economics and management), humanities, visual and performing arts, sport sciences, geography, health and social studies.
The following departments and institutes achieved a high rating of 4 or 5 in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise: Business and Management, Biological Sciences, Brunel Institute of Bio-Engineering, Design, Economics and Finance, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Human Sciences, Information Systems and Computing, Law, Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Politics, Systems Engineering and the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing.
We at Brunel have always been confident that our courses bear comparison with the best. Following Teaching Quality Assessments, all subjects assessed to date have achieved at least 20 points out of a maximum 24. The majority have achieved the sought-after Excellent benchmark of 22 or more.
Facilities
All first-year students are provided with university accommodation, should they want it. All rooms have free internet access. Each campus has its own sporting and recreational facilities and you are able to use any of the general resources, sporting or otherwise, on other campuses even if you do not live or study there.
Each campus library provides areas for private study, media rooms, video units and computer access.
Student life
The Union of Brunel Students helps to organise and fund around 100 clubs and societies, so there should be any number of activities to suit your interests. The Arts occupy an important position at Brunel – dance, music, drama, media production and the visual arts are all catered for at a range of ability levels. The University has a full performing arts programme with evening and lunchtime recitals, theatre, comedy and dance.
A university counselling service is available to students and the Medical Centre, which houses an NHS general practice, also looks after Student Welfare. There is accommodation on campus and the University has a Housing Office to help those who wish to find somewhere to live off campus.
International students benefit from having their own Student Union representative. English language tuition is available from the Language Centre. The International Office co-ordinates a meet and greet service from Heathrow and an orientation programme for new students. Meeting houses are available for all faiths and weekly worship is arranged for Christians and Muslims.
Each year a number of scholarships are offered to international students through the Brunel International scholarship programme.
