The University of East Anglia (UEA) is situated in 270 acres of parkland just two and a half miles away from the famous historical city of Norwich. With internationally renowned faculties of study in Arts and Humanities, Health, Science and Social Science, the university enjoys worldwide recognition for its academic achievements and attracts students from over 100 countries to study on campus. They enjoy a safe, clean and enjoyable environment that meets all of their academic, social and sporting needs.
The University gained its Royal Charter in 1961 and took its first students in 1963. It has a student population of almost 13,000, of whom over 1,500 are from outside the UK and over 1,000 are from outside Europe. Of more than 150 degree award institutions in the country, UEA is consistently ranked in the top 20 for most academic subjects. In 2005 it was voted in the top three traditional universities for student satisfaction, and was also shortlisted as University of the Year by a leading newspaper.
UEA is divided into schools of study covering a wide range of subjects, including: biological sciences; chemical sciences; development studies; economics; education; American studies; environmental sciences; history; information systems; law; literature; management, medicine and mathematics. Many have been graded as Excellent for the quality of their teaching as well as their outstanding contribution to ground-breaking research, including the adjacent Norwich Research Park which is one of Europe's leading centres for scientific enquiry.
UEA also boasts a top quality Sportspark with Olympic sized swimming pool and the highly rated Sainsbury centre for the Visual Arts. With over 3,000 student residences on campus and excellent road, rail and air links this makes the university a great choice for students.
Facilities
The university library provides its students with 750,000 books, 1,000 study places and 1,000 computers. There is a nursery with 50 places for children aged six months to five years. On-campus there is a supermarket, newsagent, post office, travel shop, two bookshops, games room, common rooms, print room, darkroom, advice centre, snack bar, vending machines, minibus hire, snooker tables, launderette, ticket agency, six cafes and a restaurant.
UEA has the largest single sports complex of any university in the UK. Facilities include a swimming pool, climbing wall, sports hall, multigym, weight-training facilities, indoor football facilities, baseball diamond, six squash courts, 12 tennis courts, cricket nets, badminton courts and two new hockey pitches. There are 30 acres of playing fields on the edge of the campus. Locally, there are the Norfolk Broads for extensive water sports and recreation.
Student life
The Dean of Students Office organises a reception and introductory programme for new students arriving at the beginning of the autumn and spring semester. The Office also helps students to adjust to life at UEA and offers general advice and assistance. There is a health centre on-campus with doctors, nurses, dentist and a psychiatrist available.
The University has counsellors and also a Nightline run by the Students’ Union. The University also runs a careers service.
The chaplaincy centre on-campus is for people of any faith. There is a worship room for Muslims and in the city, there are Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals and places of worship for Jews, Muslims and Buddhists.
A free international students’ newsletter is published once every two months, a newspaper every two weeks and two magazines once every term.
